HOW TO MAKE MONEY AS A MUSIC TEACHER

Today I will be discussing how to make money as a music teacher. We all want to know if there is money in our profession. Back in the day, many parents did not allow their kids to take music lessons or study music because they believed that there was no money in it. However, in my opinion, I believe that there is money in all professions, sometimes you just have to think more creatively and try out new ideas to generate income in it.

GIVE MUSIC LESSONS

This is one of the easiest and simplest ideas you can do to make money in the music education profession. There are ALWAYS students that want to learn, from children to adults. You could choose your target market, for example, I prefer teaching kids because they are always willing to learn, they are super adorable and very resilient.

I love teaching the basics of music and taking it slow, which is what kids need. If you however, do not have much patience with kids or taking it slow, you may want to look into teaching high school kids. The only downfall about high school kids is that they have extremely busy schedules between sports, social life and academics, so music may not be high on their priority list.

You can teach music lessons from your home, all you need is a piano or digital piano and a music stand, then you are good to go. If you live with your family or friends just ask them to be quiet while you are teaching, because nobody can learn in a noise and it wouldn’t be nice to compete with someone else whilst explaining concepts.

In addition, ensure that your house mates are not in the same teaching room as you, this may make your student nervous if they are. Ensure that your students are aware of their lesson days and times.

PERFORM

If you love performing or playing in a band or group, it pays to play at gigs. You can advertise your services on your local advertising platform, for me it would be gumtree or OLX. These ads are usually free and all you have to do is type out an ad and add some pictures and people will view it and reply.

You may get most of your performances from playing at weddings and corporate gigs. I personally love performing and it’s such easy money if you love it. You can charge them per song or per hour if they require background music. Performances make you become a better musician as you need to play under pressure, but it is a great atmosphere to play in.

START A BLOG

How-to-make-money-as-a-music-teacherYou can start a blog, like the one I have. I created mine through Wealthy Affiliate and you can earn income from affiliate links on your website while blogging about music education or music performance etc. What attracts visitors to your site is your content and the niche you choose is up to you. Starting a blog will require some time and may take years before you become very successful in it, but the world is going online now and it’s a lucrative opportunity to make some bucks and share your knowledge and experience.

When creating blog posts, make sure you provide appropriate pictures and make it attractive to potential customers. There are many website platforms to use, I have not tried out many of these, because I stumbled upon WA (Wealthy Affiliate) and it has been very helpful to me. The platform provides you with the educational tools that will help your business.

CREATE AN ONLINE BUSINESS

How-to-make-money-as-a-music-teacherThis is another great avenue to try out. You can create your own content and educational materials in the form of PDF documents and sell it on your website. In addition, you can create music courses on your website, such as How to Learn Music Theory or How to Read Music, etc.

You could give one free PDF to all your viewers and charge them for the courses they would like to download and attend. In this way, you will reach far more people than providing music lessons from home. In the online business, you could provide one-on-one music lessons via Skype or Whatsapp.

However, this may not be very simple to do or it may be time-consuming. A better idea would be to record your educational lessons and have that as part of your Guitar course for example. You can upload the videos to your website and you can have a separate YouTube channel too, the possibilities are endless.

I love this idea, because I love the internet and I love that any knowledge I seek is at my fingertips. It’s so great that we don’t have to go to 3 years of a tertiary institution to learn this knowledge, and most people do not want to go that far in details, but may just want to learn the basics of music or an instrument.

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS

In this blog post I have given a few suggestions on how to make money as a music teacher. There are no limits to what we can do anymore (if there were in the past). The digital world has made it possible for anyone and everyone to have the same opportunities to be successful. You just need to think creatively and dedicate the time to pursue your goals and dreams. The wonderful thing is that you can be successful by doing something you love to do – music.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas on how to make money as a music teacher, I would be very interested to hear your suggestions. If you have an experience in any of the above mentioned topics, please share them and add to them if you would like to.

Thank you for reading the blog and I look forward to hearing from you.

    1. Hi Benny,

Oh great you are also a musician. Which instruments do you teach and do you work as a music teacher?

  2. You have chosen an awesome niche! I am not a music teacher, but I value the importance of a music teacher in our society. I learned the violin as a kid and played for years. I know personally that it made an impact on my life. I read your blog about music in the movies. As an avid movie watcher, I totally agree with you. I am impressed by the facts you gathered about Mr. Bean. It is truly fascinating to think about the role music has on the entertainment value of movies.

Music teachers are important. I can see your site being valuable to them. Best wishes to you.
